About

Jean Garcia-Gathright is a machine learning engineer and researcher at Spotify, where she develops and evaluates user-centered and data-driven models that power engaging, personalized experiences. Her research interests include: metrics and evaluation, algorithmic bias, and mixed methods, which she examines in the broader domains of recommender systems, information retrieval, and natural language processing. She is especially proud of championing a product-oriented way of working in research, facilitating consensus-driven project planning, communication, and collaboration.

Jean received her Ph.D. from UCLA in Biomedical Engineering with a specialization in Medical Informatics. Before that, she worked on real-time control systems at NASA, taught robotics to children, and dabbled in public policy analysis.
